and I lost to a a little girl. got lapped by everyone in fact. I blame it on the fact that I was driving an electric cart like it was gas, and so use the break, which is really unnecessary in an electric kart. plus I think the little girl had more in-kart experience than me. I have to go back there

Weight... Even 20 pounds makes a huge difference when you're dealing with a light go kart with a few hp. Don't be hard on yourself.

oh no, I had a blast! I want to go back and try again now. that was my first real world experience with any type of racing, now I'm totally hooked. I completely understand the weight difference thing, though I think in this case it was mostly about me sucking

95% of all gocart tracks require your foot being planted 100% of the time, only losing speed when you corner, because you are cornering.

The really hard part of karting is remembering that you don't have to go fast (unless you're racing). Go fun, instead. Just having fun chucking the kart about is a really good way to learn how it handles, so you're probably going to improve your lap times as well, if you try for a few quick laps.

As well as all-up weight, weight distribution is important - too much weight over the back tyres and you can't oversteer and will get lots of understeer. You're the heaviest part of the kart, and you can move your weight around quite a bit by sitting more or less upright and leaning left and right.

One of my best friends and her sister (both girls actually) both love karting, and they're bloody quick too. I'm quicker flat-out than my friend, but her race-pace is about similar to mine. Her sister is on another level though. She's bloody quick. Holds the lap record on the short-track at Buckmore Park (the track where they discovered Lewis Hamilton).
In other words, no shame in losing to a girl. Many are just as fast, if not quicker than I am :)

yeah gender really has very little to do with speed or driving ability, at least at this level.
